«It may sound like a cliché, but my time as an au pair in Spain was truly life changing. I boarded the plane from New York in May, very nervous for my first long-term travel abroad. Little did I know, I had NOTHING to be nervous about because every moment of my experience was incredible. I was in Madrid for 3 months during the summer with a lovely host family, who throughout the three months of my stay became real family–I can’t imagine my life without them. One of my biggest concerns about going was my many dietary restrictions/allergies, but Aida helped me find a family that was able to accommodate me. They went above and beyond in making sure I was comfortable and had plenty of safe food to eat. Being an au pair was a challenge, but one that was immensely rewarding. Working through a language barrier and adapting to a new culture all while being in charge of two 7 year olds could be overwhelming at times, but my host mom was always there to talk to and helped me work through any issues that arose (which were very few!). While the days were spent with the children, my evenings and weekends were all for exploring the beautiful city and traveling around Spain. It was very easy to meet friends; Aida connects you with other au pairs in your area and there is a huge social network of au pairs on Facebook. Groups of au pairs are always meeting up all around Madrid and you will never be lonely! I think the most difficult part of the whole experience was having to leave; I made lifelong friendships, gained una familia española, improved my Spanish and explored a part of the world that I had been dreaming about for years. Madrid touched my heart and soul forever; I can’t wait to return next summer!»
